As coaches and parents of young athletes we all recognize the importance of a good night's sleep on our athletes' performance both in the gym and out. But how important exactly is sleep to a young athlete's development, and how much sleep is enough?

Sleep, proper hydration and nutrition can greatly affect an athlete's performance, but of these 3 variables sleep is the easiest to measure and control, and can have the biggest impact by far on an athlete's training. Teenage boys can sleep as many hours a day as a baby, and a teenage boy who trains intensely needs even more recovery sleep than his peers.
